OS replacement

This is an OS replacement, not dual boot. The “Go back to Kobo” option in InkHub Settings starts restoration of the original Kobo software. Back up your books and settings before restoring.

Before you start

Read the installation and computer setup guide (opens a new tab)

  1. Confirm the exact model

    Read the model name in your device’s settings. A USB connection alone does not prove compatibility.

  2. Back up your documents

    Keep a separate copy on your computer. The installer checks the release and device before making changes.

  3. Keep a way back

    Read the model-specific recovery steps before installing. Keep the cable connected during the operation.

Run from memory

Try only

Run InkHub from memory without replacing your installed operating system. Switch the Kobo off and on to return to it.

Connect your Kobo in fastboot
  1. Connect directly to this computer with a reliable USB cable. Keep it still.
  2. Power the Kobo fully off.
  3. Hold the top page-turn button, briefly press and release power, then keep holding only the page-turn button for about 15 seconds. The screen stays dark.
  4. Choose Connect and check device below, then select USB download gadget in Chrome.

Do not hold power and a page-turn button together. That is the factory-reset gesture and can erase your documents.

Before you try: device and data risks

Device changes can leave your e-reader unable to start or unusable (sometimes called bricking), permanently lose books, notebooks, settings or other data, and require technical recovery, repair or replacement. Recovery can take time and cost money, and may not succeed. A temporary trial is not risk-free; an automatic backup or rollback is a safeguard, not a guarantee of recovery.

Check the exact model and supported firmware, use suitable equipment and reliable power, and make a separate, checked backup of anything you want to keep. You need the skills to follow the model-specific installation and recovery instructions. Stop if a check fails or you are unsure. Do not disconnect power or USB during an operation.

This is a personal, DIY choice. You are responsible for preparing your device and following the instructions. Proceed only if you are willing to undertake the recovery work that may be needed. The installation fee buys convenience, not insurance, a hardware warranty or paid technical support.

Returning to Kobo software

After installing, use InkHub’s restore-to-Kobo option in Settings. Restoration is not a one-boot switch: it can erase books and settings, so copy them to your computer first. Keep the recovery partition and your backup intact.

If an installation fails, do not disconnect during a write. Reconnect in fastboot to retry the installation. Factory recovery is a last resort and erases data.
